Team social events: our 2019 report

Team social events: our 2019 report

Workplace happiness isn't just about competitive pay and benefits. Increasingly, more people are placing a higher value on wellbeing and working conditions, where flexibility, career progression and team bonding are an integral part of the company culture.

By investing time and effort into understanding what makes our people happy at work we improve both the general mood of each individual member of staff and overall morale. This investment in a positive culture helps individuals to feel included and valued in the company, which in turn encourages them to invest back.

One of Enable's top priorities is to provide a positive environment for all of our employees to work in -- this is reflected in our excellent Glassdoor employee reviews!

We operate a social group of volunteers whose objective is to organize various social and charitable events for all staff members. These include large annual events such as the Christmas and summer parties, as well as smaller events such as quiz nights, meals out, video and board games and sporting activities such as five-a-side football. A huge appeal of these social events is that it gives our employees the opportunity to bond and take part in activities they might not otherwise have considered or have found the time to take up themselves.

Let's dive in to the five key social events that Enable organizes to keep morale high and our employees productive.

1. Annual parties

Enable hosts two large annual parties for all of our employees and their partners to attend. The first being the Christmas Party which was most recently hosted at the RSC's The Other Place, where we had a 3-course meal, DJ, dance floor, and a bar serving a variety of drinks all night. There's no cost for our employees to attend this event as Enable kindly foots the bill (including a generous tab behind the bar!). The second is the Summer Party which was held last year at Stratford upon Avon Boat Club. This event is more family orientated, including food, drinks, games and much more. It is here that we also host the Enable Bake Off, giving our employees the opportunity to show off their skills in the kitchen. The party this year again extended beyond the planned event, proving the genuine friendships that have developed at Enable over the years and across all departments.

2. Office quiz night

Every year Enable hosts a quiz  which takes place in our office after work. Even if you're not too good at quizzes there is always food and drinks provided and prizes to be won (even for coming in last place). We mix the teams up, so as to contain employees from various departments who may not know each other all that well, which provides an excellent structure for them to get to know each other, work together and generally do some good bonding.

3. Monthly events

The monthly events are a great way for new starters to get to know their colleagues outside of the work environment and often see more of the local area since many events take advantage of the fantastic location we are based in. Most recently events have included frisbee golf, a murder mystery night, cocktail making, go karting, a gin tasting evening, pancake lunch served in our Chill-out area and various meals at local restaurants in Stratford upon Avon. These events are often the catalyst for genuine team chemistry at Enable creating fond memories for all our employees.

4. Video and board game nights

On the first and third Tuesday of the month a group of employees stay after work for either a video or board game night. The evenings make for an excellent opportunity to get to know the team in a very different environment. With some members of staff bringing in their own games and gadgets for other employees to have a go on there is a great community present. We are not limited by the generosity of our members though; Enable also has its own rapidly expanding library of physical and digital games. So, whether an old hand looking to expand their games repertoire, or someone wanting to try something a bit different, along with a large order of pizza by everyone taking part these evenings have something for everyone.

5. Sporting activities

Every Thursday after work we play 5-a-side football at Stratford Leisure Centre from 6-7pm. This is open to all members of staff with any level of ability. It's just for fun, but it always promises to be a competitive encounter! Significant numbers of staff have also indicated their interest in other sporting activities for the future such as badminton which is already in the pipeline for the future. Enable finds that these types of sporting activities help keep our employees engaged, as well as improving their all-round health and wellbeing.

Conclusion

The success and diversity of activities occurring at Enable is proof of the great environment and culture all the staff contribute to. The social events prove to be a great way to provide high-impact learning, increase team skills and communication, and improve morale, thus, leading to greater productivity.

Happy workplaces help companies perform better and for any business to be successful, it will need to retain exceptionally loyal and motivated staff. This is extremely important to Enable; software development is highly skilled and exhausted or demotivated minds are a lot less productive and more likely to make mistakes. Our company benefits significantly by providing a positive environment for all of our employees to work in as teamwork and collaboration are consistently linked to innovation and achievement.
